A meeting of the Proposition 65[1] Carcinogen Identification Committee (CIC)[2] was held on November 15, 2016, at the California Environmental Protection Agency headquarters building in Sacramento, California.  The committee considered nitrite in combination with amines or amides for listing as known to the state to cause cancer.

The CIC also provided OEHHA with its advice concerning the relative priority of five chemicals (or chemical groups) for possible consideration for listing at a future meeting of the CIC.

A summary of the meeting is provided below.  The meeting agenda is available here.

SUMMARY OF THE LISTING DECISION FOR NITRITE IN COMBINATION WITH AMINES OR AMIDES

The CIC, by a unanimous vote of the six members in attendance, made the following determination:

  • Nitrite in combination with amines or amides has not been clearly shown through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles to cause cancer, by a unanimous vote. Consequently, nitrite in combination with amines or amides will not be listed as causing cancer. Based on discussion at the Panel meeting, nitrite in combination with specific types of amines or amides may be presented to the CIC at a later date.

SUMMARY OF CHEMICAL PRIORITIZATION DISCUSSION

OEHHA referred five chemicals (or chemical groups) to the CIC for advice and consultation pursuant to the OEHHA Proposition 65 Prioritization Procedure.  See the table below for specific advice from the CIC concerning chemical priority assignments.
