November 16, 2000 Meeting of the Science Advisory Board's Carcinogen Identification Committee (CIC)

The California Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is the lead agency for the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65).

The Carcinogen Identification Committee (CIC) of OEHHA's Science Advisory Board advises and assists OEHHA in compiling the list of chemicals known to the State to cause cancer, which is mandated by Health and Safety Code Section 25249.8. The Committee serves as the State's qualified experts for rendering an opinion whether a chemical has been clearly shown, through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles, to cause cancer.

A public meeting of this committee will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2000 in Training Room B, Elihu Harris State Building, 1515 Clay Street, Oakland California, at 10:00 a.m. and will last until all business has been conducted or until 5:00 p.m.

IV. SUMMARY OF COMMITTEE ACTIONS

OEHHA is committed to public participation and external scientific peer review in its efforts to implement Proposition 65. OEHHA welcomes public input on any of the agenda items identified above. A public notice announcing the availability of the three draft hazard identification documents describing the evidence on the carcinogenicity of 1,3- hexachlorobutadiene, 4-methylquinoline, and MX(3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2-(5H)-furanone) was published in the California Regulatory Notice Register (CRNR) on August 25, 2000 (Register 2000, No.34-Z). The public comment period for the three draft hazard identification documents closed on October 24, 2000. A public notice announcing the availability of the revised CIC criteria document was published in the CRNR on September 22, 2000 (Register 2000, No.38-Z). The public comment period for the revised criteria document closed on October 23, 2000. Oral comments may be made to the Committee at the meeting on November 16, 2000.

The CIC's revised criteria document entitled, "Criteria for Identifying Chemicals for Listing as 'Known to the State to Cause Cancer'", as well as the three draft hazard identification documents may be obtained from the Proposition 65 Implementation Office by calling (916) 445-6900 or from the OEHHA web site.
