December 10, 1998 Meeting of the CIC

The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is the lead agency for the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65).

The Carcinogen Identification Committee of OEHHA’s Science Advisory Board advises and assists OEHHA in compiling the list of chemicals known to the State to cause cancer which is mandated by Health and Safety Code Section 25249.8. The Committee serves as the State’s qualified experts for rendering an opinion as to whether a chemical has been clearly shown, through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles, to cause cancer. In accordance with the Local Drinking Water Protection Act of 1997, the CIC is required to make a finding on or before January 1, 1999 as to whether methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) has been clearly shown to cause cancer.

A public meeting of this committee will be held on Thursday, December 10, 1998 in Orchard Suite in the University Union Building at the California State University Sacramento (CSUS), California from 10:00 a.m. until all business has been conducted, or 5:00 p.m.. CSUS is located at 6000 J Street.

Note: The venue has been changed from "Auditorium at 714 P Street, Sacramento, California" to "Orchard Suite in the University Union Building at the California State University Sacramento (CSUS), California".

VI. Summary of Committee Actions

OEHHA is committed to public participation and external scientific peer review in its efforts to implement Proposition 65. OEHHA welcomes public input on any of the agenda items identified above. Comments sent by mail, fax, or delivered in person or courier should be sent to:

The draft documents describing the evidence on the carcinogenicity of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), 2-aminofluorene, and 4-amino-2-nitrophenol may be obtained from the downloads section below. To allow adequate time for the Committee to review comments on this document, OEHHA requests that all submittals on MTBE be received at its office on or before November 17, 1998, and submittals on the other two documents by November 24, 1998. These closing dates will complete the 60-day comment periods (see September 18 and 25, 1998 California Regulatory Notice Register, Register 98, Nos. 38-Z and 39-Z). The Committee prefers that information for its consideration be presented in writing prior to its meetings so that it can give due consideration to the material and so that it can devote time at the meetings to discussions and clarifications, rather than to extensive oral testimony. Documents on the candidates for removal from the Proposition 65 list are also available from the downloads section below. OEHHA requests that all submittals on these candidates be received by Monday, November 30, 1998.
