Availability of Draft Data Summaries and Draft Priorities for Chemicals With Respect to Their Potential to Cause Cancer: Request for Relevant Information: EXTENSION OF PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD

The California Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), as lead agency for the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65), has developed a procedure for prioritizing chemicals for consideration under Proposition 65 by the "State's qualified experts". Two committees of the Science Advisory Board (SAB), known as the Carcinogen Identification Committee, and the Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant (DART) Identification Committee, serve as the State's qualified experts for rendering an opinion as to whether a chemical is known to the State to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

On October 3, 1997, OEHHA published a notice in the California Regulatory Notice Register announcing the release of the draft data summaries and draft priorities concerning 28 chemicals under consideration for carcinogenicity evaluation. A public workshop was held on November 18, 1997 in Sacramento, California to provide an opportunity for interested parties to present oral comments and to discuss the scientific data. Since the public workshop, OEHHA has received request from interested parties that an extension of the comment period be provided to allow for the submittal of complete and relevant information. OEHHA hereby extends the public comment period to 5 p.m., Monday, December 15, 1997.
