Meeting Synopsis and Slide Presentations from the Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee Meeting Held on November 29, 2017

A meeting of the Proposition 65[1] Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee (DARTIC)[2] was held on November 29, 2017, at the California Environmental Protection Agency headquarters building in Sacramento, California.  The committee considered chlorpyrifos and n-hexane for listing as known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity.

SUMMARY OF THE LISTING DECISION FOR CHLORPYRIFOS

Chlorpyrifos will be added to the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity based on the developmental endpoint. 

All eight DARTIC members in attendance voted that chlorpyrifos “has been clearly shown through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles to cause developmental toxicity.” (This was the only endpoint considered by the DARTIC at this meeting.) Six “yes” votes were needed to add chlorpyrifos to the list.

SUMMARY OF THE LISTING DECISION FOR N-HEXANE

n-Hexane will be added to the Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to the state to cause reproductive toxicity based on the male reproductive endpoint. 

In voting on whether n-hexane “has been clearly shown through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles to cause reproductive toxicity,” the nine DARTIC members in attendance made the following determinations:

  • For the male reproductive toxicity endpoint, six members voted yes, two voted no, and one abstained. Six “yes” votes were needed to add n-hexane to the list for this endpoint.
  • For the female reproductive toxicity endpoint, all nine members in attendance voted no. 
  • For the developmental toxicity endpoint, three members voted yes, and six members voted no.

UPDATE OF THE TITLE 27, CAL. CODE OF REGULATIONS, SECTION 27000 LIST OF CHEMICALS WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN ADEQUATELY TESTED AS REQUIRED

The DARTIC voted unanimously in favor of updating the Section 27000 List of Chemicals Which Have Not Been Adequately Tested as Required, based on recommendations included in the OEHHA staff report and information provided by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation and the US EPA.

STAFF UPDATES
The Committee was provided with updates on activities related to chemical listings, adoption of Safe Harbor Levels, Proposition 65 litigation, and other regulatory activities.
