Human Health Risk Assessment of Malathion

Health Risk Assessment of Malathion Coproducts in Malathion-Bait Used for Agricultural Pest Eradication in Urban Areas

Supplemental to: Health Risk Assessment of Aerial Application of Malathion-Bait California Department of Health Services, February, 1991.

This document, which is supplemental to the 1991 document Health Risk Assessment of Aerial Application of Malathion-Bait, is a product of the 1993 memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). The 1993 MOU requested OEHHA to evaluate the potential health effects from exposure to chemical coproducts present in malathion used for Medfly eradication. Accordingly, the present document provides additional information regarding the potential health effects from exposure to other materials found in the malathion technical mixture.

During the course of its preparation, reviewers from both inside and outside of OEHHA provided input into the document. Within OEHHA, reviews were conducted by all technical sections as well as the executive office. Externally, reviews were provided by DHS, the Department of Pesticide Regulation and the Department of Food and Agriculture. Members of the 1991 Malathion Public Health Effects Advisory Committee also received a draft report for review. Comments from reviewers at all levels were carefully considered and where appropriate, included in the final document.
