Sodium Nitrite: Extension of Public Comment Period for Notice of Intent to List

The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65 or the Act) requires the Governor to publish, and update at least annually, a list of chemicals known to the State to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is the lead agency for the implementation of Proposition 65.

On December 18, 1998, OEHHA published a notice in the California Regulatory Notice Register (Register 98, No. 51-Z) announcing the extension of the public comment period for the Notice of Intent to List Chemicals which was published on December 4, 1998 (Register 98, No. 49-Z). The public comment period was extended to 5 p.m., Tuesday, January 19, 1999. OEHHA has received requests seeking an additional extension of the comment period for sodium nitrite which is one of the candidate chemicals mentioned in the December 4, 1998 Notice of Intent to List Chemicals to allow for the submittal of complete and relevant scientific information. OEHHA hereby extends for two weeks the public comment period for sodium nitrite to 5 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, 1999. The public comment period for all other chemicals that were the subject of the December 4, 1998 notice will close on January 19, 1999.
