Release of the Final Report on Synthetic Turf
The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) of the California Environmental Protection Agency is making available the Final Report of the OEHHA Synthetic Turf Study (Press Release). The report evaluates the health risks to users of artificial turf fields by focusing on noncancer hazard and cancer risk to the chemicals detected in crumb rubber infill used on synthetic turf fields in California. Overall, the risk assessment study found no significant health risks to players, referees, coaches and spectators from on-field or off-field exposure to field-related chemicals in crumb rubber infill from synthetic turf fields. OEHHA reviewed comments received from the public and the advisory panel and revised the report as appropriate following the April 28, 2025 SAP meeting, with the major conclusions of the study remaining unchanged.
Public Review Draft
On March 13, 2025, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) announced the release of a draft report on the potential health risks associated with the use by athletes, referees, coaches and spectators of synthetic turf fields. The public comment period for the draft report was held from Thursday March 13, 2025 to Monday, April 28, 2025. The full notice is available for download.
