Synopsis, Follow-up Actions and Slide Presentations from the December 10, 2007 Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee Meeting

The Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee (DART IC) met on Monday, December 10, 2007 to advise the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) whether to proceed with the preparation of hazard identification materials for eight chemicals.  Following staff presentations, public comment and committee discussion, the committee recommended that OEHHA prepare hazard identification materials for all eight chemicals.

As reflected in the unanimous recommendations of the voting members present, and in consideration of the totality of the discussion at the meeting, OEHHA will begin preparation of hazard identification materials for bisphenol-A, chlorpyrifos, DDE, hexavalent chromium and sulfur dioxide.  A public notice announcing the 60-day data call-in period for these five chemicals will be published in the California Regulatory Notice Register and posted on the OEHHA Web site on January 18, 2008.   OEHHA anticipates presenting hazard identification materials for some or all of these five chemicals to the DART IC at a meeting that is tentatively planned for late summer 2008.

Later in 2008, OEHHA will begin preparation of hazard identification materials and announce data call-in periods for the remaining three chemicals discussed at the December 10 meeting:  caffeine, methylisocyanate and bromodichloromethane (which may be incorporated into the group of trihalomethanes as discussed below).  OEHHA will consider available resources and projected workload in determining the timing of future activities on those chemicals.

At the request of the DART IC, OEHHA will screen the trihalomethanes as a group and particulate matter (a component of air pollution) using the data screen discussed in the OEHHA staff presentation at the December 10 meeting.  The results of this screen will be presented at the next DART IC meeting in 2008.   Pending the results of the trihalomethanes data screen and further discussion with the committee, bromodichloromethane (which is a trihalomethane) may be folded into this group of chemicals.
