Public Workshop - Solicitation of Input on the Proposed Process for Developing Safe Harbor Numbers

The California Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is the lead agency for the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition 65).

Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide clear and reasonable warnings prior to exposing individuals to chemicals listed as known to the State to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm in amounts above specified risk levels. Assessment of the risk associated with a given exposure level to a listed chemical would aid in the determination on whether a warning is required or not pursuant to Proposition 65. As the lead agency, OEHHA has in the past developed no significant risk levels for chemicals known to cause cancer and maximum allowable daily dose levels for chemicals known to cause reproductive toxicity. These levels are oftentimes collectively referred to as "safe harbor numbers." OEHHA plans to develop additional safe harbor numbers for those listed

OEHHA is soliciting input on the process and order by which the safe harbor numbers should be developed. A public workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15, 2000 in Training Room B, Elihu Harris State Building, 1515 Clay Street, Oakland, California. The workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will last until all business is conducted or until 5:00 p.m.

More specific information and an agenda for the workshop will be published in a future public notice in the California Regulatory Notice Register and posted on the OEHHA Web site. Questions concerning the workshop may be directed to the Proposition 65 Office.
