On February 7, 2014, the California Environmental Protection Agency’s (Cal/EPA) Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) published a notice in the California Regulatory Notice Register (Register 2014, No. 6-Z) announcing its intent to list nitrite in combination with amines or amides as known to the State to cause cancer under the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.1

The February 7 notice initiated a 30‑day public comment period that was scheduled to close on March 10, 2014.  OEHHA has received requests from the American Meat Institute and the North American Meat Association seeking an extension of the comment period.  OEHHA hereby extends the public comment period until 5 p.m., Thursday, May 8, 2014.
