Overview of the 2024 Meeting of the Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee (DARTIC)

The Developmental and Reproductive Toxicant Identification Committee (DARTIC) voted in favor of listing bisphenol S as a reproductive toxicant (male reproductive endpoint) under Proposition 65 by a vote of 9 (yes) to 0 (no). A recording of the full meeting and transcript will be posted online when available.

A meeting of the DARTIC was held on December 12, 2024, starting at 10:00 am. During the meeting, OEHHA staff presented a summary of evidence on the male reproductive toxicity of bisphenol S (BPS). This was followed by a discussion and deliberation on the evidence by the DARTIC. The DARTIC then determined that BPS was clearly shown, through scientifically valid testing according to generally accepted principles, to cause male reproductive toxicity by a vote of 9 (yes) to 0 (no). BPS was first placed on the Proposition 65 list for reproductive toxicity, based on the female reproductive endpoint, on December 29, 2023.

Ahead of the meeting, OEHHA had issued a request for relevant information on the potential reproductive toxicity of BPS, which opened on March 4, 2022 and closed on April 18, 2022. The data call-in was followed by publication of the hazard identification document entitled “Evidence on the Male Reproductive Toxicity of Bisphenol S” and a public comment period from September 27, 2024 to November 12, 2024.

Finally, OEHHA staff presented updates on chemical listing via the administrative listing mechanisms, safe harbor levels, and other regulations and litigation since the last DARTIC meeting.

OEHHA was pleased to swear in three new members of the DARTIC; Dr. Martine Culty, Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Southern California; Dr. Sandie Ha, Associate Professor of Public Health at the University of California, Merced; and Dr. Kim Harley, Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. All three were appointed to the DARTIC by the Governor in 2024.
