 Proposition 65 - Law/ Regulations/ Rulemaking Activity
Proposed Regulatory Actions Concerning Acrylamide
[03/21/05]

On April 8, 2005, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) within the California Environmental Protection Agency will publish formal notices proposing a series of regulatory actions to address the issue of acrylamide exposures from foods under Proposition 65 (the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, codified at Health and Safety Code section 25149.5). Acrylamide has been listed as a carcinogen under Proposition 65 since 1990. At the time it was listed, acrylamide was known to be used in the formation of plastics and grouting agents. The chemical was discovered in many common foods in 2002. Much research has been done since that time and a number of international, federal and state entities are involved in on-going research and investigation of the health implications of acrylamide exposures from foods.

OEHHA's proposed regulatory actions are the result of a public process begun by OEHHA in 2003. These actions are being proposed by OEHHA to provide guidance for the regulated and enforcement community concerning acrylamide exposures from foods.

All interested parties are encouraged to participate in the regulatory processes that will be initiated on April 8, 2005. Copies of the relevant materials will be simultaneously posted on OEHHA's website at www.oehha.ca.gov . Comments or questions should be directed to:
