Public Comment Period and Workshops on Draft Inhalation Cancer Unit Risk Factor for Perchloroethylene

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) has released a document summarizing the derivation of an inhalation cancer unit risk factor (URF) for perchloroethylene (tetrachloroethylene).  URFs are used to estimate lifetime cancer risks associated with inhalation exposure to a carcinogen. OEHHA is required to develop guidelines for conducting health risk assessments under the Air Toxics Hot Spots Program (Health and Safety Code Section 44360(b)(2).  In implementing this requirement, OEHHA develops new and revises existing URFs for many air pollutants.  The existing inhalation URF for perchloroethylene was revised using the most recent “Air Toxics Hot Spots Program Technical Support Document for Cancer Potency Factors,” finalized by OEHHA in 2009.

The inhalation URF document for perchloroethylene was made available February 16, 2016 on the OEHHA website.  The posting of the document commenced a 45-day public review period that will end on April 1, 2016.  Public workshops will be held in Northern and Southern California at the following locations and times:

March 8, 2016                                                                       March 11, 2016
9:00 AM - 12:00 PM                                                             1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

After the close of the public comment period, the documents will be revised as appropriate by OEHHA, and peer reviewed in 2016 by the State’s Scientific Review Panel on Toxic Air Contaminants.
